Jules attends UK Ethical Investment Week #2: Occupy London

Interestingly, on my way into St Paul’s Cathedral the ‘Occupy London’ protest was raging outside on the streets. It was ironic that we were meeting for ethical and sustainable investing on the inside – it would have been wonderful to have some more engagement with the two parties who it would seem have a similar ideology. Not only were sustainable and environmentally friendy investing concepts discussed, also Corporate Governance. Not only a major issue driving the GFC, governance scandals have continued to shock globally, most recently in the form of Rupert Murdoch’s News Ltd.

Corporate governance processes are put in place to ensure the equitable distribution of rights and responsiblities among different participants in a corporation, such as the board, managers, shareholders and other stakeholders. The aim is to align the interests of individuals, corporations and society as closely as possible. This is the key issue that has resonated internationally with the ‘Occupy’ movement. But what is being done to protect Australian investors?
